The phone supports MIDI, polyphonic and MP3 ringtones and comes with a pleasing selection.

Should you wish to close the slider without ending a call, press the left shoulder button first. To end a call, press the call end button or close the slider if it's open. To answer a call, simply press the call send button or open the slider. In the US it's sold unlocked by importers which means you can use it with any carrier's SIM. The N80 is a quad band GSM world phone that works on the 850/900/1800/1900MHz bands, so you'll be able to use it anywhere GSM service is available. The speaker phone is loud and is not distorted and the phone's overall volume is very loud and clear through the built in speaker. Call recipients commented that we sounded like we were calling from a landline. Voice clarity and volume are excellent with no echo or excessive white noise. It did equally well with both bands and typically got an even stronger signal than the Nokia 6682 which is itself a strong performer. We tested the phone on the 850MHz band with Cingular and on the 1900MHz band with T-Mobile. The Nokia N80 is a typical GSM Nokia with very strong reception. The battery lives under a door on the back and the SIM sits under the battery. There's a macro - landscape slider just below the lens (stiff, so it won't accidentally move and change your camera setting) and no self-portrait mirror since the phone has a front-facing VGA camera. The main camera lens is located on the back along with the flash. When you slide the phone closed it asks you if you'd like to lock the keypad (the default is "no") and you can unlock it by sliding the phone open or pressing first the left then the right shoulder keys. This means you might accidentally slide it open when pulling it out of a pocket, but it is easy to slide open one-handed. There is a bit of lateral play but nothing to be alarmed about and the slider locks (though not as tightly as we'd like) shut. The slider is sturdy with no exposed rails or contacts on the back. It's 1" thick but short thanks to the slider design where the keypad slides down. It's quite a bit smaller than the Nokia N90, N93, N91 and N73 Nseries phones and is smaller than the Treo 700p and Cingular 8125 (HTC Wizard). Now that's fairly thick and won't please the RAZR and Motorola Q crowd, but its height and width put it in the downright small category for a feature-rich smartphone. It measures 3.75" x 1.97" x 1" and weighs 4.7 ounces. It's amazingly small, though the N80 is one of Nokia's most powerful phones.

The N80 is for those of us who are tired of smartphones that are too big for pockets or seem a bit large when held to the ear. The N80 is manufactured in Finland and is available in both silver and black.

The Nokia N80 ships with a lithium Ion battery, 128 meg Mini SD memory card, world charger (prong adapter may be required for the US), USB sync cable (CA-53), stereo earbud headset with mic, Pop-Port to 3.5mm audio adapter, wrist strap, software CD with PC Suite and LifeBlog for Windows and the usual detailed and well-written Nokia manual. The N80 runs on Nokia's S60 3rd Edition on Symbian OS 9.1 and sells for approximately $550 in the US. It's a quad band GSM world phone with EDGE and Euro 3G (not compatible with US 3G).

The N80 is one of Nokia's flagship phones with WiFi, a 356 x 416 resolution display, 3 megapixel camera with flash, PictBridge printing to PictBridge enabled printers, UPnP, Bluetooth, FM radio, MP3 player, full PIM applications with syncing capability, email, one of the best mobile web browsers we've seen and MS Office document viewers. They're sold by Nokia and importers unlocked for use with any GSM carrier, which generally means T-Mobile and Cingular in the US. So you'll need to buy one from or otherwise from an importer. The one problem is Nseries phones aren't offered by any US Carrier as of this writing. Competitors have left us out in the cold and 2006 may be the year that Nokia wins us over.

And let's face it: there are plenty of us who need a smartphone but also want a super camera, multimedia features and even an FM radio. These are strong business phones (if you can forgo a QWERTY keyboard) with a multimedia bent. The Nokia N80 is part of Nokia's new Nseries of Symbian OS smartphones running S60. In 2006, S60 has caught up, and perhaps surpassed the competition, now offering 2 and 3MP cameras that are hard to beat, integrated WiFi on some models, QVGA and higher displays with high color depth, the usual Nokia great RF, smartphone syncing and Office capabilities and even QWERTY keyboards in models like the Nokia E61. Though they lagged behind the Palm and Pocket PC Phone competition in the bells and whistles category, they offered fantastic usability, great call quality, generally strong reception and nice styling.
